Discover the Deep Meanings Behind Japanese Tatami Edge Patterns

In our tatami-beri (tatami edge fabric) workshop, you’ll not only create your own beautiful bag but also learn about the symbolic meaning woven into each traditional Japanese pattern.

Recently, one of our students in Osaka crafted this custom bag, choosing patterns that reflect both elegance and cultural richness. Each motif used in tatami-beri has a story and carries a wish for prosperity, protection, or growth.

Asanoha (Hemp Leaf): Representing strong growth and vitality, this pattern has been used for centuries as a symbol of health and well-being, especially for children.(In this bag, it is used on the left and right edges of the bag and on the shoulder belt.)

Yuki-no-wa (Snow Ring): Inspired by the beauty of snowflakes, this pattern signifies purity, peace, and renewal. It reflects the hope for a peaceful life and the idea of rebirth, as snow melts to nourish new life in spring.(In this bag, it is used in the center three rows.)

In our workshop, you’ll choose from a variety of these beautiful patterns and colors, each with its own meaning, to craft a bag that’s not just functional but also culturally significant.
